Many foreigners enjoy spending time in Thailand. Some come to Thailand for a vacation but some decide to stay longer and live in Thailand for a couple of years or longer. Many of those who want to stay longer in Thailand embark on a career as English teacher. Thailand has a great demand for native English speakers. Many native English speakers are attracted by the local lifestyle and teaching English is a good way to make living in Thailand a reality. Some may already have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate but some wish to take their TEFL education in Thailand. There are many opportunities for that. But moving abroad is not always as easy as it might feel at first.

Moving abroad can be challenging but it can serve as a good experience in your life. It can teach you how to be patient, how to solve problems, to work with different kinds of people and how to adjust to different circumstances, among other things. It can give you an opportunity to meet people you probably would not have met otherwise, learn about new cultures and learn a new language. Culture shock is something that will happen to everyone to some degree, so there is no need to be alarmed. You just need a right, open-minded attitude to help you through it. You need to realise that things will be different to what you are used to, so you need to mentally prepare before you move abroad.

In Thailand the school year begins in May and ends in March, with breaks in October and April. The majority of hiring is usually the month before each term, but it takes place year-round. The most popular destinations for TEFL teachers in Thailand are Bangkok, Chang Mai, and Phuket. It is not necessary for English teachers to speak or understand Thai because many schools prefer that foreign teachers use only English with their students. But it might be useful if you understand at least a little bit of Thai.

So all in all, it is advisable to prepare before you move to Thailand to work as a TEFL teacher. Find out a little bit about the country, where you would like to take your TEFL education and where you would like to live. Learn at least some useful phrases in Thai. Once you are in Thailand you are bound to learn more.
