When you work as a teacher in a foreign country, not only are you doing your duty as an educator, but you will be exchanging your culture with your host country. Teaching is a rewarding experience and when you teach English in Thailand, you are sure to receive an experience of a lifetime.

There are numerous reasons as to why people come to Thailand. The food, easy-going lifestyle, beautiful beaches, nightlife—you name it. Different people will have different experiences of this country. Same goes for foreign teachers who come to teach in Thailand. Their opinions of the country may vary from positive to extreme negative depending on the school and the co-workers they have to work with. We have heard all kinds of stories from teachers who came to teach in Thailand who were disappointed because things were not what they expected to be. This is normal in many jobs and the education field in Thailand is no exception.

This may seem quite obvious, but it is worth mentioning that if you want to be a teacher, you have to like what you do. You have to like to teach. Teaching requires patience and, it is not always easy work. Believe us when we say that for some schools, patience is a must. Not all students are enthusiastic to learn English and occasionally in some classes you may find yourself surrounded by rowdy kids who are absolute nightmare to handle. Again this depends on the school you are assigned to go teach and the students’ age group. On the other hand, if you are teaching in a small language institute, things might be less chaotic.

On a more positive note, there are foreign teachers who love teaching in Thailand and they ended up settling in this country and starting a family. If you ask these groups of teachers what is it about Thailand that they love, you might hear some similar responses. For example, they love the hospitality and friendliness of the Thais, their spouses are Thai, or they really wanted to make a difference in the education system of this country.

Whatever experiences other teachers had, they do not have to be yours. Positive or negative you’ll never know until you try experiencing them yourself. If things turn out great, then congratulation to you. But if things do not turn out the way you want, don’t despair, just think of it as a learning experience. Life is unpredictable. Unpredictability can actually be exciting and fun.
